SAP E-mail Discussion Lists

E-mail discussion lists have been set up in order to encourage SAP users from across the University to communicate and share information. Questions and comments posted to the lists will help improve our understanding of user issues and requirements.

What discussion lists can I subscribe to?Users can subscribe to the following lists:

  • SAP Finance Users discussion list - you may subscribe to this list if you are a registered SAP user (any module).
  • SAP Purchasing Users discussion list - you may only subscribe to this list if you are a registered user of the SAP Purchasing module.

In subscribing to the lists, users are encouraged to form a "user network" in order to share information and tips, and answer each other's questions. Typical questions we would expect to be posted to the lists are "Does anybody know how to ..?"

The lists will also provide a forum for the SAP team to communicate future plans and new developments to users who have chosen to subscribe.

How do discussion lists work?Discussion lists at the University are created and managed by Mailman mailing list management software. Every message sent to a discussion list is copied to all other members of the list. Finding out information about the lists, subscribing and sending messages to the lists is all done via e-mail. If you are sending a message to the list, you can do so in the same way you would normally e-mail a colleague. However, to carry out an action, for example, subscribe or unsubscribe, you need to send an e-mail message containing a specific command. Commands are typed into the message field with no extra words before or after them. When sending commands, you don't need to give your message a subject, as Mailman ignores this field.

The listname for the SAP Finance discussion list is: sap-finance

The listname for the SAP Purchasing discussion list is: sap-purch

How do I subscribe/unsubscribe?
To subscribe to a list, send the following message to Mailman:

E-mail Field

What you type

To:

Name of list - Request@lists.leeds.ac.uk

Subject:

<ignore>

Message:

subscribe

The listname will either be sap-finance or sap-purch, according to the list you wish to subscribe to.
Your message will be forwarded to the list manager, who will decide whether or not you can join (i.e. if you are a registered SAP user). If you are a SAP user, you will receive a welcome message from Mailman, and the Information File for the list. If you are not a SAP user, your request will be rejected by the list manager and you will not receive a response. Once you have subscribed, messages sent to the list will be automatically copied to you. If the volume of e-mails you receive becomes unmanageable, you may wish to unsubscribe. To do this, send the following message to Mailman:

E-mail Field

What you type

To:

Name of list - Request@lists.leeds.ac.uk

Subject:

<ignore>

Message:

unsubscribe

How do I send a message to the list? Once you have subscribed, to send a message to the list (which will be automatically copied to list members), you need to send your message to the list address rather than to Mailman:

E-mail Field

What you type

To:

listname@lists.leeds.ac.uk

Subject:

<subject of your e-mail.>

Message:

<your message>
