Viruses and McAfee

What to do if McAfee fails to identify a virus

(Note: this document is aimed at IT Support Staff)

This does happen from time to time but it's becoming more frequent as malware is released into the wild as many different variants - the sole purpose of which is to take advantage of the delay in producing and distributing updated 'DAT' files to deal with new variants.

If you find a PC in this situation can you please submit a sample of the suspicious file to https://www.webimmune.net/  If McAfee send you an Extra.DAT let Neil Jowsey know in order to get the ePO server updated. This will ensure the Campus is now protected against this virus. The turnaround from McAfee is typically just a few hours.

http://www.virustotal.com/  is a very handy tool for seeing what a wide range of antivirus tools make of any suspicious files you may find.
