Starting Jaws

Currently the login process is not accessible so a co worker or a member of staff have to start the programme after logging in without speech:

Jaws is available from the start menu via the keystrokes :-

Control Escape p a j Enter

It should start via shift + ALT + J from the desktop

Or via clicking to the the accessibility sub menu via Start and Programmes

IF Jaws is already installed the shortcut key combination Shift + Control + J will start the programme. Jaws is set to run from the system tray so its window is not presented on the screen.

Obtaining Help in Jaws

press INSERT+J to activate the JAWS application window, and press ALT+H to display the Help menu.

Press INSERT+F1 to hear Screen Sensitive Help about a particular application that you are working with.

INSERT+H tells you about any hot keys relevant to a particular screen.

INSERT+F1 pressed twice quickly will open a JAWS Help topic for the currently running application if it exists.

INSERT+1. A help mode that speaks what a key will do without actually doing the action

Jaws has behaviors that are custom written for popular applications like Microsoft Office, IE etc.

Keystrokes that can be used with Jaws

In Addition to having its own keystrokes which use the insert key Jaws responds sensibly to most windows and popular application keystrokes. For example ALT + F opens the file menu in any application. Reproduced below are a list of keystrokes for the baslc operation of Jaws. Many more can be found in the Jaws help file. What is reproduced below should be enough for basic use. Problems can occur in applications and on webpages where there is no keyboard access.

For Reading Text in any application:

Say All INSERT+DOWN ARROW
This starts reading downward and should get Jaws immediately saying something useful.

Say Character NUM PAD 5
Say Word INSERT+NUM PAD 5
Say Prior Character LEFT ARROW
Say Next Character RIGHT ARROW
Spell Word INSERT+NUM PAD 5 pressed twice quickly
Say Prior Word INSERT+LEFT ARROW
Say Next Word INSERT+RIGHT ARROW
Say Sentence ALT+NUM PAD 5
Say Prior Sentence ALT+UP ARROW
Say Next Sentence ALT+DOWN ARROW
Say Paragraph CTRL+NUM PAD 5
Say Prior Paragraph CTRL+UP ARROW

For Frames
